The Merseyside Archaeological Society awards small grants up to £500 in support of archaeological study. We are keen to support a broad range of activities around the Liverpool and Merseyside region, with particular interest in research which addresses the aims of the Society. The criteria are flexible and appropriate for individuals or groups seeking funding for a range of archaeological projects.
Eligibility Any individual or group researching/investigating topics related to archaeology of Liverpool and Merseyside.
Aims of MAS
To promote archaeological activity and research within the County of Merseyside and provide a focus for archaeological interests.
To be prepared to organise archaeological resources within the Merseyside County with regard to fieldwork and excavation.
To encourage the preservation of any sites, buildings, monuments or records of archaeological interest in the County.
To publish.
To collect information for a central records system.
To arrange meetings, lectures, exhibitions, conferences and visits to places of historic interest.
To collect funds whereby financial assistance may be granted to achieve the above functions.
To encourage public interest in and concern for antiquity and archaeology and should associate itself with other bodies with cognate interests.
Examples of things we can fund (this is not an exhaustive list, anyone is welcome to apply)
Resources (textbooks, archaeology equipment etc)
Travel (to conferences, excavation sites)
Research (costs of analysis, permits, training)
Costs towards publications
Community engagement
Anything which aligns with the aims of the society (as above)
Conditions Successful applicants must:
Submit a summary explaining how the funding was used to address the aims of the Merseyside Archaeological Society (evidence can be in the form of photos, videos, audio files, receipts, publications, documents etc)
Submission date for summaries and evidence is 31st March following the grant spending deadline on 1st January
Acknowledge MAS on any presentations or publications directly relating to any research supported by MAS funding
Any applicants which fail to comply with MAS conditions may be required to pay back the full amount of the grant received for the project.
Outcomes Successful applicants are encouraged to share their work with members of the Merseyside Archaeological Society. This can be done through visual, verbal, written or practical means such as:
Present a talk
Provide a poster, blog etc (to be shared on the MAS website)
Provide a site tour etc.
Successful applicants are also encouraged to join the MAS society to reap the full benefits of being involved.

The Deadline is 31st January each year. Applications will normally be acknowledged within fourteen days of submission, indicating either that the application meets the criteria, or with a request for more information. All valid applications will then be considered at the next committee meeting with a decision made by 1st April. Grant funds must be requested and spent by 1st January the following year.
